Journey through south Florida searching for beautiful and rare birds in ancient moss-covered cypress swamps, everglades prairies that join the sky and brilliant marshes that sparkle with flashes of roseate wings. Scan across the tips of grass for searching hovering Snail kites and hear the squeal of the Limpkin.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
DR. DALE E. GAWLIK — Waterbird Ecology and Conservation
Dale E. Gawlik, Ph.D. Dale Gawlik is Director of Florida Atlantic University's Environmental Science Program and a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. His research focuses on waterbird ecology and conservation, wetland and intertidal ecosystems, restoration ecology, and the use of birds in aquatic ecosystem management. He has published over 70 papers, many focused on how hydrologic processes control wading bird populations in the Everglades of Florida. He and his students have developed heron, stork, and ibis habitat models that link bird populations to the hydrologic management and restoration of the Everglades. Dale serves on the IUCN Heron Specialists Group and IUCN Stork, Ibis, and Spoonbill Specialist Group. He also is a member of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Wood Stork Working Group. Dale has been held a number of elected leadership positions in professional ornithological and scientific societies, including his current positions as Secretary of the Association of Field Ornithologists and Councilor for the Waterbird Society.

PLANTATION PRESERVE BIRD WALK: 8:00-11:30 am — FREE, sponsored by South Florida Audubon Society. Limpkin, Sora, Marsh Wren, wintering warblers, possible Spot-breasted Oriole, Parakeets, Brown Thrasher & more. Meet in the preserve parking lot at 8:00 am or at Holiday Inn at 7:30 am to car pool. Snake Road for Crested Caracara, Wild Turkey, Sandhill Cranes, Northern Harrier, Wilson Snipe and shorebirds. (Cost: $90)

SOUTH DADE HOTSPOTS Old Cutler Wetlands and Dump Marsh look for Short-tailed Hawk, cowbirds, shorebirds & more. At Blackpoint Marina-Mangrove Cuckoo and Prairie Warbler. Castellow Hammock for Painted Bunting, Ruby-throated & Rufous Hummingbird. A stop in Kendell for exotics such as Red-whiskered Bulbul and Parakeets. (Cost: $90). 8 min. required

STORM WATER TREATMENT AREA 5 & CENTRAL PRAIRIES Top 100 Hot Spots in US., We target Snail, Kite, American Bittern, Limpkin, Purple Gallinule, Wood Stork, Roseate Spoonbill, Fulvous whistling duck, up to 10 species of wintering ducks and 50,000 birds. Also Painted Bunting, Sandhill Crane and many flycatchers. Traveling along Snake Road can produce King Rail, Crested Caracara, Eastern Meadowlark and numerous species of raptors. (Cost: $90)

SOUTH FLORIDA EXOTICS A tour of Broward and Palm Beach Counties looking for up to 30 plus possible exotics such as Mitred, Monk, Blue-crowned, and Nanday Parakeets, Red-crowned and Orange-winged Parrots It will also include a tour of the Tall Cypress boardwalk for wintering warblers and possible Great-horned Owl. Depending on what is being seen stops can include Evergreen Cemetery, Richardson's Historical Park & Tamarac Pond plus more. (Cost: $90). 8 Required min.

EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK The tour will start at Anhinga trail with close views of wading birds, Purple Gallinules. Short-tailed Hawk and possible American Bittern. On Research Road possible Brown-headed Nuthatch and White-tailed Kite. A picnic lunch at Long Pine Key: Brown-headed Nuthatch and White-tailed Kite. A picnic lunch at Long Pine Key-Eastern Bluebird and E. Towhee. Quick stop at Paurotis, Mrazek, West Lake and Eco-Ponds for Roseate Spoonbills and more. At Flamingo a look for Black Skimmer, Reddish Egret, White Pelican and many shorebirds. The best place to see Am. Crocodiles and Manatees at Flamingo. Schedule may vary on tide and rare bird alerts. Cost-(Cost: $90). DINNER on your own will be at a local restaurant. FUN AWARDS will be given to special Birders.

SOUTH FLORIDA BIG DAY- South Florida is one of the top ten birding destinations in the U.S. Birders can easily find 60 species in one day. But on this BIG DAY we will try to find as many species as possible by visiting the area's top birding destinations. The schedule will vary based on rare birds being seen currently and target species locations. (Costs: $90)

UPPER KEYS NATURE ADVENTURE A drive across Card Sound to North Key Largo is our best chance for White-crowned Pigeon and Cuban Yellow Warbler. In North Key Largo NWR we will look for wintering warblers and hawks. John Pennekamp State Park will include a short hike in the one of the U.S.'s most endangered habitats-coastal tropical hardwood forest. In the museum there will be time to see the displays and aquarium of the U. S's only coral reef system. A late lunch at the famous Alabama Jack's waterfront restaurant for conch fritters & chowder to get the real atmosphere of the Keys. A great way to end the festival.(Costs: $90)
